Reflections of a Father

by Bill Schneider

Dads can be so many things throughout life. The memories of my late dad, Dr. Tom Schneider – a giant, strong man – carry descriptions like provider, enforcer, proud veteran. But my strongest memory and description of my dad is one that I never would have imagined: caregiver.

My mom Ellen’s health began to slip when dad retired. Caring for her became his priority, and his role description expanded to include homemaker, too. He cooked, shopped, and cleaned – all while meeting mom’s every need, growing older together in their home.

Although dad always seemed tired, he never complained and did it all with a kind of grace I had never seen before. I can only describe it as a kind of true love that comes from deep inside and can keep a person going no matter what.

As I’m remembering dad and mom during that chapter of their marriage, it’s reminding me of the reasons I joined the Board of Directors of Do Good Door County and also volunteer with SAIL – Senior Advocacy for Independent Living. It brings me great joy to help older adults stay in their homes!

We’re planning an announcement later this summer about exciting developments with the SAIL program to meet increasing demand and need to help residents age well in their homes. As this and all of our programs continue to evolve, your generous donations are needed to help make a difference in the lives of older adults in Door County!

Give Now: Donations of any amount will help older adults continue living safely in their homes, stay healthy and active, and remain connected in their communities.

Volunteer: Gifts of time are meaningful, too! Contact us at DoGoodDoorCounty@gmail.com or 920-659-5159 to learn about opportunities that match your interests and fit with your schedule.

Connection and belonging are a critical part of our mission. When my mom passed, my dad’s heart was broken. As much as he could have been a little relieved, and welcomed some time for himself, he was just deeply sad.

What I experienced watching my parents navigate the end of their journey together inspired me to get involved. I hope sharing a piece of their story inspires you to join me in supporting essential, local programs for older adults in our communities. I’m not getting any younger either, so maybe in the back of my mind I’m working on my legacy, too.

On behalf of all of the Do Good Door County board members and staff, we’re grateful for your involvement, commitment, and support!
