The Joy of Aging

by Cynthia Germain

I recently came across some studies that gave me even more reason to embrace the aging process. Turns out, many of us actually get happier as we get older. That’s right. Despite the cultural noise that often treats aging as something to resist, the evidence says something entirely different: life satisfaction tends to increase in our later years. And perhaps more importantly, we gain a deeper sense of what really matters.

So, how can we lean into that and truly enjoy life as we age?

1. Stay Curious and Engaged
Whether it’s joining a book club, mentoring someone in your field, or learning to paint for the first time, staying mentally and socially engaged brings joy—and keeps our minds sharp. Purpose is a powerful thing, and it doesn’t have to be grand. Sometimes purpose is as simple as having that one thing that is meaningful to do each day.

2. Prioritize People Over Stuff
Research consistently tells us that relationships matter more than riches. Spending time with people who lift you up, who make you laugh, who listen—these are the relationships that nourish our well-being. Make the call. Say yes to coffee. Sit and really talk. These small moments add up to a full life.

3. Move a Little, Laugh a Lot
You don’t have to run marathons. A daily walk, gentle yoga, or dancing in your kitchen can do wonders. Movement keeps the body going, but laughter keeps the spirit light. And when the two combine? That’s magic.

4. Embrace Your Own Timeline
There’s a wonderful freedom that comes with age. Many of us find ourselves less worried about what others think. We begin to value our time, our energy, and our peace of mind in new ways. So take the trip. Wear the bright colors. Say what you mean. Be who you are.

Yes, aging brings change. But it also brings perspective, resilience, and the opportunity to focus on what we truly enjoy. It’s not about pretending we’re not getting older—it’s about celebrating the strength and wisdom we gain each passing year.
