The Power of Alone Time

by Cynthia Germain

There is no doubt that being social is essential to good health as we age but ask anyone who enjoys their own company, and they’ll say there’s a big difference between being lonely and being alone. Solitude can be a source of self-awareness and creativity and those who like it often possess deep self-awareness and resilience. It is essential to balance these qualities with meaningful social connections but let’s take a look at those individuals who possess unique abilities that enable them to thrive in being alone. Here’s what they may have:

Self-Awareness and Independence: Older adults who enjoy solitude are typically deeply self-aware and independent. They understand their needs, values, and boundaries, making them less reliant on external validation. This self-sufficiency allows them to find contentment in their own presence.

Deep Thinkers and Reflective: These individuals often engage in deep thinking and reflection. Their time alone provides them with the opportunity to contemplate life, their experiences, and the world around them. This reflective nature leads to a profound understanding of themselves and others.

Selective with Relationships: Rather than seeking out numerous superficial connections, older adults who prefer solitude are selective with their relationships. They value quality over quantity, choosing to invest in meaningful and authentic connections with others.

Creativity and Innovation: Solitude fosters creativity and innovation. Without the distractions of social obligations, these individuals can fully immerse themselves in creative pursuits.

Resilience and Strength: The ability to enjoy one’s own company builds resilience. Older adults who embrace solitude are often better equipped to handle life’s challenges, as they have cultivated inner strength and a strong sense of self-reliance.

Contentment in Simplicity: These individuals find joy in the simple things in life. Whether it’s reading a book, taking a walk in nature, or simply enjoying a quiet moment, they appreciate the beauty of simplicity and the peace it brings.

It is important to emphasize the importance of socialization, and something we should encourage at every turn as advocates for older adult wellness. It is essential, however, to recognize those that thrive in being alone and appreciate their self-awareness, creativity, and inner strength. Certainly, combining the benefits of solitude with the necessity of social engagement, older adults can lead richer, more fulfilling lives.
