Bringing Back the Heart of Community

by Cynthia Germain

In today’s fast-paced world, the cherished spirit of neighborliness often seems like a relic of the past. Yet, the Age Friendly initiative, anchored by AARP’s Eight Domains of Livability, offers a promising blueprint to revive that sense of community. These Eight Domains define the essential aspects of a community that supports everyone, especially older adults, in living well and feeling connected.

At the foundation of this framework are Outdoor Spaces and Buildings, which emphasize the creation of inviting parks, safe sidewalks, and accessible public structures. Such environments naturally encourage spontaneous interactions and shared experiences reminiscent of a time when neighbors routinely gathered in communal spaces.

Transportation, the next domain, is about ensuring reliable, accessible mobility options. Whether it’s through public transit or pedestrian-friendly pathways, efficient transportation fosters the kind of everyday encounters that once turned simple trips into opportunities for conversation and connection.

Housing under this initiative is not merely about shelter; it’s about crafting homes that are affordable, safe, and adaptable to changing needs—much like the familiar neighborhoods of the past where multi-generational living arrangements supported community ties and independence.

Social Participation reinforces this connection by promoting local events, cultural programs, and volunteer activities that bring people together, echoing those times when community celebrations and regular social interactions were the norm.

Respect and Social Inclusion is a domain that calls for the dismantling of barriers and the celebration of diversity, ensuring that every resident, regardless of age or background, feels valued—just as communities once thrived on mutual support and shared responsibility.

Civic Participation and Employment further nurture this spirit by empowering individuals, particularly older adults, to contribute their wisdom and skills to community decision-making, echoing the days when every voice in the town square was heard.

Clear and accessible Communication and Information are also key to building these revived communities. By blending traditional methods with modern technology, communities ensure that every resident is informed and connected, much like the old neighborhood bulletin boards and face-to-face chats that once kept everyone in the loop.

Finally, Community Support and Health Services offer a robust safety net, providing the care and well-being that remind us of the close-knit support systems where neighbors looked out for each other.

By embracing these Eight Domains, the Age Friendly initiative not only outlines a practical roadmap for modern livability but also rekindles the enduring spirit of the past. Each domain plays a pivotal role in creating an environment where the values of care, respect, and community thrive, proving that even in our contemporary society, the timeless ideals of neighborliness can flourish.

We are dedicated to developing a Livable Community, one that supports the efforts of the Eight Domains (see our YouTube channel for more info) and the ideals of past days, making Door County a place where we can age in the way we want, in the place we want, and be a part of the community that we love.
